I will cover a series of posts on how to transform Windows 7 to look like other operating systems. Let me start with transforming Windows 7 to Windows 8.
Restore point
Before you start anything, create a restore point, in case you are not familiar with what you are doing and mess up anything, you will need to restore your system.
To make everything simple and safe, put every customization files into a new create folder. Don't move your files to anywhere after your customization.
Theme / Visual style
In order to install third party theme, you will need to install UxStyle. Just download the Windows 7 version and install the tool (Run as administrator). Note that it doesn't have any UI. It'll run as a service in background and will allow you to use 3rd party themes.
Next, download the Windows 8 RTM theme bundle, a zipped archive that available at here. If you have any problem with applying a theme, please visit and follow the instructions (Step 1 to 4) on this page.
Now, right click on your desktop, select Personalize. The theme should on the list right now, select it to apply.
Boot screen
Be careful what you are doing. I'm not responsible for any damage of your system. Don't try it if you are not an experienced user and if you have no installation disc to repair your system when something goes wrong.
Login screen

Download and follow the instructions in here to get stylist metro UI login screen. If you prefer more original look of Windows 8 login screen, please use this or this.
If you want to play something safe, you can simply use Logon Screen Tweaker (Run as administrator) to change your Windows 7 default login background to this background or any background you like.
Start button
Download Start Orb Changer and run it as administrator. Replace your default start button with this or this.
Navigation button
You will need a Navigation Button Customizer and the bitmaps (select File then Download to download Metro.zip). Remember to run the tool as administrator.
System properties logo
Download and run System Properties Logo Changer as administrator to replace your default Windows 7 logo with Windows 8 logo.
Mouse cursor
Download Windows 8 cursor at here, unzip it and right click on Aero S/ SL/ XSL to install. Then head to Control Panel, select Mouse, select Pointers tab and select the Windows 8 cursor to apply.
Screen saver
Download Windows 8 clock screen saver and install it. Right click on desktop, select Personalize, and select Screen Saver on right bottom corner, choose the correct screen saver and apply.
Start screen
Well, there are a bunch of utilities out there to imitate Windows 8 on Windows 7: Omnimo UI for Rainmeter, Domino, Newgen, Mosaic and WinMetro from IObit.
Charms bar
You can get Charms bar in Windows 7 by using this software or this.
Wallpaper
Get official Windows 8 wallpapers at here. If you like simple and clean wallpaper, go here or here. Or if you want something newer like Windows 8.1, go here instead.
Icons
Ribbon UI in Windows Explorer
Windows 8 also features Office 2010 Ribbon UI in Windows Explorer. You can get the Ribbon UI in Windows 7 Explorer using this tool.
